December Happenings in the West End – Early Edition

Happy Thanksgiving from the West End Neighborhood Association Board!

Get Your Turkey Trot On! Thursday, November 27, at 9AM

Adults and kids can still register to participate in the annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning at 9AM. Register now and pick up your packet at Shu’s Idaho Running Company (Albertson’s Marketplace on State Street) these days and times:

  • Saturday 11/22 10pm – 5pm
  • Monday 11/24 12pm – 6pm
  • Tuesday 11/25 12pm – 6pm
  • Wednesday 11/26 12pm – 3pm

The run starts and Cecil Andrus Park and continues through the West End!

Helping Those in Need This Season

Stay tuned for WENA’s annual collection to help those in need. Board Member Katie Erley is leading this effort and will have more details about dates, locations, and worthy charity.

Meet Your WENA Board – December 16 at 5:00PM

Instead of a typical board meeting, we’re mixing it up and feeling festive! Join your board members at Gil’s K-9 at the corner of 25th and Main. Happy Hour starts at 4PM and lasts until 6PM. Board members will be there at 5PM and how long they stay is open. Come when you want. No host bar. Food is available to order. Stop in and enjoy the great neighborhood vibe.

Fairview Park Construction Continues

Fairview Park renovation is well underway For more information about the Fairview Park improvements, click here.

City of Boise’s project manager Jason Miller, provided the following update as the project comes into the home stretch:

  • Project is on schedule to be complete by the end of calendar year, weather dependent.
  • Playground audit is complete, and remaining items are to be addressed in the next few weeks.
  • Playground surfacing has been repaired
  • Basketball goals should be installed in the next few weeks
  • Focus is on finish grading and installation of street van accessible parking.
  • Contractor is preparing to complete asphalt and street repair in early December.
  • Building repairs are still underway and should be done in early December.
  • Basketball court striping depends on the weather and will happen as soon as the courts dry and are within temperature specifications.
  • There are two tennis courts and one court is striped for two pickleball courts but you must bring your own net.

The southeast corner of the park will not be affected by the renovation project.

Design Review Meeting – November 12 at 6:00PM

 The proposed design of the River District Hotel (3150 Main Street) is scheduled for review by the Design Review committee on November 12th at 6 pm at City Hall. Agenda is here.

City of Boise’s project manager Jason Miller, provided the following update:

  • Project is on schedule to be complete by the end of the calendar year, weather dependent.
  • Playground installation is complete, pending safety audit scheduled for week of 11/17.
  • Playground surfacing that was damaged during shipping is scheduled for repair this month.
  • Basketball court will be poured week of 11/10.
  • Contractor will begin ACHD improvements on Bannock this month.
  • Building repairs are awaiting final door frames and doors scheduled to arrive in early December.  Electrical repairs are scheduled for November.
  • Begin landscape and irrigation repairs.
  • Maybe striping the basketball court if weather permits.
  • There are two tennis courts and one court is striped for two pickleball courts but you must bring your own net.

The southeast corner of the park will not be affected by the renovation project.

October Happenings in the West End

Neighborhood Meeting – October 1 at 6:00PM

A proposed development at Whitewater Blvd and Moore Street by Gardner Group will be explained at Whitter Elementary Library today at 6PM. If you can attend, please do! The proposed development includes townhomes and single-family homes.

City Council Candidate Forum – October 23 at 7PM

A candidate forum for Boise City Council District 6 will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 7:00 PM at Pierce Park Elementary in Boise. This free, nonpartisan event will feature candidates Jimmy Hallyburton (incumbent), Lisa Sanchez, and Lynn Bradescu. The West End Neighborhood is represented by District 6.

This forum gives voters the chance to hear directly from the candidates about their priorities, ideas, and perspectives on the issues that matter most to Boise’s neighborhoods and residents. Candidates will present their vision for the city, answer questions from the moderators, and participate in a respectful exchange of views to help inform voters ahead of the election.

All members of the community are invited to attend and be part of this important discussion about Boise’s future. This forum is sponsored by The League of Women Voters. 

More information about the issues in the upcoming city election can be found here. Election day is Tuesday, November 4.

  • The project is on schedule and expected to complete by the end of the year.
  • The playground equipment purchase should be reviewed by city council in September and installation to being shortly afterwards.
  • The tennis courts will be striped in September once final post tensioning is complete.
  • Utilities are going in now and the contractor will be following utilities with concrete walks in September.
  • Restroom will be receiving the designed upgrades in September/ October.

The southeast corner of the park will not be affected by the renovation project.

The Treasure Valley Canopy Network is again offering a free tree per household.   • The project began July 15 and is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
  • The park website will be updated as the project progresses.
  • The contractor is working with ACHD and there will be intermittent closures on Bannock as the ADA access is installed.  Notifications will be per ACHD requirements.
  • Construction hours are 7 to 6:30 weekdays and 8 to 6:30 on weekends with prior approval.  No weekend work has been requested to date.

The southeast corner of the park will not be affected by the renovation project.

Cone with a Cop – August 12

City of Boise is holding a meet-and-great event called, “Cone and Coffee with a Cop” on August 12th at Push & Pour/The Stil at 13 S. Latah St. from 2-4pm. This is a chance to meet with officers and just talk. Please join us!

Join us August 20th for an interactive training designed to empower neighborhood leaders in creating safer, more connected, and people-friendly communities.

This workshop will teach you how to plan, lead, and document neighborhood walk audits – powerful tools for identifying issues, sparking conversations, and building momentum for change. Whether you’re focused on pedestrian safety, accessibility, or neighborhood beautification, this workshop will give you the skills and confidence to bring people together and turn observations into action.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • How to plan and organize a successful neighborhood walk event
  • How to engage diverse participants and guide inclusive conversations
  • Tips for identifying walkability issues like crossings, sidewalks, lighting, and accessibility
  • How to capture useful photos and notes for follow-up
  • Techniques for reporting findings and collaborating with partners to create solutions
  • Resources to help guide next steps

Come ready to move, observe, and share ideas! Wear comfortable attire as we’ll be outside outdoors for a portion of the course. No registration needed.

National Night Out – August 5

The board is leaning toward skipping this year’s involvement with this community event because Fairview Park construction that will be underway. More to come about the board’s final decision.
